Current market trends have many movie makers developing adaptations of video games knowing they will be a sure-fire hit at the box office. But why are we seeing such trends? As the capital and largest city in South Korea, Seoul is a financial and cultural center of Asia. The population of the city is over 10 million, making it one of the largest cities in the entire world. The entire metropolitan area includes a population of over 24.5 million inhabitants, the second largest in the world. This accounts for nearly half of the entire population of the country. Seoul is also a strong political force in Asia, administered by a the national government directly and separated into a system of 25 districts. Located on the Han River, the city lies approximately 50 km from its neighbor, North Korea.
The name of Seoul has changed dramatically over the years. Other names for the city include Wirye-seong, Hanju, Namgyeong, Hanseong, Hanyang and Gyeongseong. The modern name comes from the Korean word meaning “capital city.”
The city is believed to have been established in 18 BC as a small settlement. It soon became part of the Joseon Dynasty, eventually becoming the capital in 1394. During Japanese occupation in the early part of the 20th century, the city went through a historical and cultural upheaval. Many of the traditional design elements were modernized or destroyed. During the Korean War following Japanese defeat, most of the city was razed through fighting between U.N. and Communist forces. The city was rebuilt very rapidly, however, during the 1960s and 1970s. In the 1990s, the Joseon dynasty’s royal palace of Gyeongbokgung was restored to its previous splendor.
In 1986, Seoul hosted the Asian Games. This was followed by a successful presentation of the 1988 Olympic Games. It also hosted the 2002 FIFA World Cup, at which time the city constructed the amazing Seoul World Cup Stadium.
Culturally, Korea has a long tradition with its national sport, Tae Kwon Do. The city houses the Kukkiwon, where the World Tae Kwon Do Federation is headquartered. The city also features three baseball teams, two basketball teams and a football team.
Seoul is recognized as the fifth most expensive city to live in the world and the second-most in Asia. Its investments in high-tech digital technologies has made it a business leader throughout the world. Over the past few years, the country of South Korea has invested billions of dollars in development opportunities to keep the city at the height of global success.

Inside the American Museum of Natural History lie 46 permanent exhibition halls, research laboratories and a renowned library. Anthropological collections of the museum include people from Asia, the Pacific, Man in Africa, the Native Americans in the United States collection, the general Native American, Mexican and Central American collections.
The Hayden Planetarium, that forms part of the Rose Center for Earth and Space, is connected to the museum. It is housed in a glass cube, which accommodates the sphere-shaped Space Theater, designed by James Stewart Polshek. One of the most sought-after exhibits in the Rose Center includes the Heilburn Cosmic Pathway. The Rose Center was opened on February 19, 2000.

May 13, 2008 AUGUSTA, MAINE-Charles L. Cragin, of Raymond, Maine, and lawyer at Maine law firm Verrill Dana has been appointed by the Secretary of the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs to chair the Advisory Committee on Gulf War Veterans. The Committee will advise Dr. James Peake, the Secretary of Veterans Affairs, on the full spectrum of health care and benefits issues that confront veterans who served in the Southwest Asia theater of operations during the 1990 – 1991 period of the Gulf War. The Committee will pay particular attention to issues that are unique to these veterans.
“Gulf War veterans made an invaluable contribution to national security and peace in a volatile region,” Peake said. “This new panel will ensure that VA benefits and programs adapt to the needs of these veterans, just as our services have adapted for veterans of other conflicts.”
“It is a great honor to join this distinguished group of Americans in evaluating how America has responded, and how it should respond in the future, to the unique issues presented by the dedicated men and women who went in harms way during the Gulf War of 1990-1991,” said Charles Cragin, Committee Chairman.

Adjutant General John W. “Bill” Libby of Maine, Commissioner of the Department of Defense, Veterans and Emergency Management, commenting on the appointment of Cragin, said, “President John F Kennedy, who served in the Pacific and was a much decorated WWII veteran used to say, ‘To whom much is given, much is expected.’ A clear corollary to this is, ‘By whom much was sacrificed – much is owed.’ This is the implied mission of the Advisory Committee on Gulf War Veterans, to ensure that which is owed is being provided and the leadership of Charlie Cragin will ensure the successful completion of that mission.”
General Libby continued, “Charlie comes uniquely qualified by virtue of his public and private service and his selection is welcomed by all of us who have served and continue to serve this Nation.”
The duties of the Committee are to examine the health care and benefits needs of those who served in the Southwest Asia theater of operations during the 1990 – 1991 period of the Gulf War and to advise the Secretary on the issues that are unique to these veterans and how these issues can best be addressed by the Department of Veterans Affairs. To carry out these duties, the Committee is expected to assess both the effectiveness of existing benefits and services and to determine the need for new initiatives and/or policies that relate exclusively to this population of veterans.
“I am so pleased that such a fine public servant from Maine has been selected by the Veterans Affairs Secretary to chair this important Advisory Committee,” said Congressman Mike Michaud, Chairman of the House Veterans’ Affairs Subcommittee on Health. “Maine can be proud of Charlie’s commitment to our veterans. Completed in 1987, they are the national performing arts venues of the Republic of China which governs Taiwan. The pipe organ in National Concert Hall was the largest in Asia when installed in 1987. National Theater and National Concert Hall were among the first major performing arts facilities to be established in Asia. Upon the death of Chiang Kai-shek in 1975, the Kuomintang government authorized the construction of a monument and cultural arts facilities on the grounds of a memorial plaza. The project cost NTD 7 billion. Yang Cho-cheng and Architects and Engineers Associates were responsible for the overall design. The buildings, though modern in function and purpose, recall traditional elements of Chinese palace architecture. The G+H Company (Germany) and Philips (The Netherlands) played leading roles in the design of the interior facilities, stage lighting and acoustics. Civil engineering issues were handled by Ret-Ser Engineers Agency (RSEA) and Engineering Corporation. Six directors oversaw the project from initial planning sessions to final completion: Jou Tsuo-Min, Chang Chih-liang, Liu Feng-shueh, Hu Yao-heng, Li Yen and Chu Tzung-ching. The structures were completed on September 20, 1987 and officially opened their doors the following month as venues of the ational Chiang Kai-shek Cultural Center. Vice President Lee Teng-hui and Premier Yu Kuo-hua presided over the opening ceremonies for the two buildings on October 31, 1987. In 1999 the Ministry of Education integrated the administration of the Cultural Center with the administrations of the National Symphony Orchestra, National Chinese Orchestra and National Chorus. In 2004 this more robust Center administration became a distinct executive judicial body. The Cultural Center is led by an artistic director accountable to a board of directors. The artistic director oversees all activities in the two venues. Each structure can host at least two events simultaneously. The National Theater incorporates a smaller Experimental Theater and the National Concert Hall incorporates a more intimate Recital Hall. The pipe organ by Flentrop Orgelbouw in the National Concert Hall was the largest organ in Asia at the time of its installation in 1987; it is heard frequently in concerts and recitals. Both structures house art galleries, libraries, shops, and restaurants. In addition to supporting performances at the two venues the Cultural Center hosts a Performing Arts Library and publishes the Performing Arts Review. National Theater and Concert Hall, like all performing arts venues in capital cities, play diplomatic as well as artistic roles. Guests regularly include the top elected leaders in Taiwan as well as international dignitaries.
